Partner Content The UK Cyber Team is a government initiative led by the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology in partnership with SANS Institute. Its purpose is to identify, develop, and support the UK’s most promising emerging cyber talent, while ensuring the UK is represented with confidence and credibility on the international cyber stage.
A Government-led Initiative with a National Mission
The most recent relaunch of the program was about far more than competition delivery. It focused on creating a space for young people to develop as cyber professionals, build lasting peer networks, and experience what it truly means to represent the UK within a global cyber community.
Why the Relaunch Mattered
The relaunch of the UK Cyber Team was driven by a shared belief that advanced cyber talent requires more than just technical challenges. It needs structure, trust, and community. While the UK has a strong ecosystem of early-stage cyber initiatives, there has been no sustained national pathway since 2019 for advanced 18 to 25 year olds to progress from early promise to international readiness.
The UK cyber team program brought those elements together through open national competition, expert-led training, coaching, wellbeing support, and international deployment. For participants, it offered a rare opportunity to test themselves at scale and to understand the demands of high-pressure, team-based cyber environments.
Impact Felt Well Beyond the Leaderboard
In the lead-up to the UK Cyber Team competition’s live final, held in the Vox, Birmingham, more than 1,300 young people applied from across the UK. Of those, 467 competed in the national online capture the flag competition, with 200 progressing to the live final. From this process, 30 skilled competitors were selected to join the UK cyber team.
What mattered most was not simply who was selected, but what participants gained along the way. Many experienced structured CTF competition for the first time, learned how to collaborate under pressure, and built confidence in their ability to operate at an international standard. For many, the program became a turning point in how they viewed their future in cybersecurity.
Preparation to International Representation
For the UK Cyber Team itself, the transition from training into international competition was defining. Preparation began long before any flight was booked. It was built through in-depth technical training, shared tooling, late-night problem solving, and learning how to trust one another when decisions had to be made quickly.
That preparation translated into a credible international debut. At the ZeroDays CTF, hosted by Team Ireland, all UK Cyber Team sub-teams placed within the top 9% of 128 teams. At the European Cyber Security Challenge, the UK returned to the European stage with assurance, finishing 22nd out of 38 national teams, which include some of the best cybersecurity competitors in Europe. This was a significant achievement for a team that had been brought together only eight months earlier. Even more impressive was capturing the first flag within four minutes of the competition starting. These moments mattered not only for their rankings, but for what they signalled. The UK belonged back on that stage, and the team knew it.
Transitioning to the Next Phase of Leadership
SANS institute’s role in the UK Cyber Team has always been one of stewardship and delivery rather than ownership. A core objective of this phase was to establish a program strong enough to stand on its own, with leadership rooted in the community it serves.
As the initiative moves into its next phase, leadership transitions to the UK Cyber Team coaches selected under SANS stewardship, now operating through a dedicated Community Interest Company. This marks a natural and positive evolution of the program, placing it in the hands of individuals who understand both elite competition and the responsibility of developing people over the long term.
The foundations are strong. The mission is clear. the program progresses with continuity, care, and ambition.
An Invitation to Support What Comes Next
As the UK Cyber Team enters this next chapter, there remains a vital role for industry, academia, and the wider cyber community. The program thrives through collaboration, shared expertise, and meaningful support.
